#33. Veterans Memorial Park

Veterans Memorial Park is the only park we hit today, and it was worth it. Shady and beautifully serene, it was fitting for a memorial park. It is located along the river at 339 N. Greenway.

Each one of the wars the United States has been involved in is represented by a marker.  Weston was very interested in all of the markers and asked us to explain them.

There is also a walking display of all of the flags that have flown over our country. It starts at the standard of Christopher Columbus and ends with the current flag.

Features:

  • Walking Path along Markers
  • Benches
  • Access to Bike Path

Mom Tips: Sully was a little young to enjoy this park, but Weston was very interested.   If I had to do it over, I’d talk more about our history prior to visiting the park.  Also, there are plaques all over the park reminding visitors to stay off of the memorials.  We did talk about that before we came, and I think it helped curb the desire to climb a bit.

Kid Tips: Sully did enjoy the flags, and Weston got very excited to see the torpedo. “I’ve always wanted to see a torpedo, Mommy! It’s an underwater bomb, if you didn’t know.”

More information about this park, including groups represented by the markers, can be found on the Wichita Parks and Rec site: http://www.wichita.gov/ParkandRec/CityParks/Pages/Veterans.aspx
