County #16: Lane

Lane County, in northwest Kansas, is the third smallest county in the state.  Dighton is the only town in the whole county, and the total population is less than 2,500.

Weston and Sully’s grandfather grew up in Dighton, so we were excited to check out the town of his legendary stories.  We first went to the bowling alley where Grandpa Greg worked as a kid.  Dighton Bowl & Diner turned out to be a delicious café, with probably one of the best Philly cheesesteak sandwiches I have ever enjoyed.  Andy mowed down a chicken fried steak the size of his head and the boys had classic kids meals.

While we were eating, we had the pleasure of meeting the owner who let the boys go check out the closed lanes of the alley.

It was a classic eight-lane manual scoring alley which reminded me of the bowling alley my parents owned in Yates Center, Kansas in the late 1990s.  The boys had never seen an alley with the overhead projectors and open ballreturns.  I think they were as enchanted as I was as a kid and begged to come back.

While I was doing research for this blog post, I found a business posting website where the owner listed the alley for sale due to her retirement.  For a cool $339,000 you could own this classic alley and diner, and a part of northwest Kansas history!

With full bellies, we headed to the town park and found some great classic equipment and a newer playset as well.

We heard the newly renovated historic hotel in Dighton was a must, but we had to get back on the road.  It’s definitely on our list for next time.

Speaking of next time, hopefully someone will re-open the also-historic Frigid Crème ice cream and burger stand and we can add this to our “been there” list.
