#120. Chisholm Creek Park South

Chisholm Creek Park South holds a special place in my heart.  When I was a kiddo, we would load up our bikes and skates and hit the trails with my grandmother and ride out our wiggles.  The winding trails and reseeded prairie make you feel like you are far from the city!   It’s a great place for an afternoon stroll, and there are a bunch of different trail options for you, so you can choose how far your adventure takes you.  The shortest trail (Quail Trail) is 1/2 mile while the Cottonwood Trail is 1.7 miles.    For a trail map, visit the Great Plains Nature Center website:  http://www.gpnc.org/chisholm.htm

Features:

  • Playground: None
  • Nature Trails
  • Open Shelters
  • Fishing Ponds
  • Wichita Wild Habitat Area
  • Bathrooms

Mom Tips:  When I was a kiddo, bicycling along the trails in the park was not prohibited, but it is now.  The condition of the blacktop has deteriorated and is no longer smooth, but it’s still great for walking the trails.  There are several spots along the trail with signs letting you know which spots would be good for birdwatching.   I recommend getting the adventure backpacks from the Great Plains Nature Center and also grabbing water.  When you’re out there, it’s hard to tell how far you are from water.  🙂

Kid Tips:  Besides the adventure backpacks, they all loved the old farm equipment that was along the trail.  They all want to come back again soon!
